Branding Basics Every Mompreneur Needs to Know

Branding can be a daunting task for any entrepreneur, but it can feel especially overwhelming for mompreneurs juggling business, homeschooling, and family life. Trust me, I’ve been there. Despite having a knack for marketing, defining and creating my brand was a journey filled with trials, errors, and valuable lessons. Today, I want to share some insights from my personal branding experience to help you craft a brand that truly reflects who you are and what you stand for.

Personal Branding Experience

Branding hasn’t always been my strong suit. Even though I love simplicity and know what works in marketing, deciding how I wanted my own brand to look was a real challenge. When I first started, I went for bold colors like teal and hot pink. I wanted to project strength and seriousness, but those colors just didn’t feel like me. I found myself drawn to softer tones like light pinks, rose golds, and boho-themed images of nature, sunsets, and the beach. These elements felt more authentic to my personality and the vibe I wanted in both my home and my business.

Branding Strategies

So, what helped me get a grip on my branding? A few simple branding courses and a lot of Pinterest. Creating a branding board in Canva was a game-changer. I searched Pinterest for themes that spoke to me, like “feminine chic” or “boho chic,” and found color schemes that matched my style. Then, I used Canva to create a branding kit with specific hex codes for colors and fonts for headlines, paragraph text, and signature lines. This kit became my go-to reference for keeping my brand consistent across my website, social media, and email marketing.

Brand Values and Mission

My brand’s core values are family, faith, and simplicity. These values are the heartbeat of everything I do, from the content I create to the way I interact with clients. I want my branding to reflect these values, with a touch of sparkle and sophistication. “Boujie” as my friends like to call me, because I also want the Christian mom and business owner to feel like I deliver high-class, tailored, straightforward content that looks and feels like a million bucks without the high price-tag. (Like finding your favorite designer in a clearance section! Score!) Having clear values and a mission for your brand is crucial. It guides your decisions and keeps your brand authentic and true to who you are.

Branding Advice

For those of you just starting out, here’s my advice: Don’t feel like a fake. You have every right to create a personal brand. Your unique perspective and the way you serve your clients is your strength. Embrace your individuality and don’t worry about what others are doing.

Even if you don’t want to be the face of your business (we’ll talk more about this later!), you still want your brand and style to reflect YOU! You are unique and how you serve your clients and customers is unique, too. In fact the more you are yourself, the more people will be attracted to you because you stand out and don’t look like everyone else. Don’t worry about what someone else is doing or has already done, you do you, Boo!

I don’t think you need to have it all together and creating a brand definitely doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Think of branding like this, going on a shopping spree for a new room in your house (say your work-from-home office!) Think of the colors you want to see in there, the style that speaks to you and feels like you (or the version of you that you want to be), the textures, the tones, and what you want to feel when you walk in the room; only the room is your online space. That should be your brand.

Tools like Canva and Pinterest are lifesavers in this journey. Canva, especially, is easy to use and powerful for creating cohesive branding elements. I also love the Chrome Extension ColorPick Eyedropper for grabbing colors that inspire me from around the web. Just start, have fun, and let your brand evolve with you.

Conclusion

Branding doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By staying true to yourself and using the right tools, you can create a brand that resonates with both you and your audience. Remember, your brand is an extension of who you are. Embrace your uniqueness and let it shine.
